St. Patrick was an engineer, he

St. Patrick was an engineer, he

For he invented the calculus and

Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day
Many years ago, when I was an engineering student at the University of
Iowa, we used to have an annual student engineering celebration during the week
of St. Patrick’s Day. The song at the
top was sung many times during the week, especially later in the evening in
“Doc’s Bar”. MECCA, as it was known, is
long gone, replaced by something much tamer, known as “E-week” to celebrate
National Engineers Week.
But the memories live on in the minds of older U of Iowa engineering
graduates. Such as: “Did I
tell you about the time we put a car
on top of the law school building???”
(Playing a prank on the law students was an important activity for
MECCA.) My close friend, Ron Upham, and
I were co-chairmen of the MECCA week celebration that year and we spent some
“high sweat moments” in the office of the Dean of Students over that one.
Follow the link below to read a newspaper story about MECCA 1965.
As I remember it was a buckboard and we tied the door to the roof shut so they could not get on the roof to remove. The person tieing the door shut repelled down from the roof.
