It was at least 35 years ago when I fired “Junior” in a
semi-fit of rage. He and “Dick” were
unloading some drums of liquid from a pick-up truck by rolling them down a crude loading dock ramp we had
built. Materials handling in the early
days was pretty basic!
One of the drums
slipped off the ramp and the top came off, spilling the liquid onto the
ground. Dick jumped down to do what he
could and when I arrived less than a minute later, Dick was struggling, try to
do something. Junior was still standing in the truck,
doing nothing.
On the spot, I jumped
in to try to help Dick and simultaneously fired Junior as I was helping Dick.
The takeaway for me:
People who try, even if not successful, are “OK”. People who stand and do nothing have no place
in an organization I am leading.
